Nestled in South Melbourne, just 100 metres from the iconic South Melbourne Market, Ferrars & York is a striking example of sustainable architecture. Developed by HIP V. HYPE in collaboration with Six Degrees Architects and built by Ironside, this award-winning project features 22 carbon-neutral apartments – as well as the sustainability minded HV.Hotel – all powered entirely by renewable energy. Designed to balance aesthetics, efficiency, and environmental responsibility, Ferrars & York sets a new standard for climate-conscious living.
By utilising responsibly sourced, low-impact materials, Ferrars & York enhances durability while reducing its environmental footprint. The building embraces passive design principles that optimise thermal comfort, maximise natural ventilation, and improve acoustic performance. Open walkways and a communal rooftop space—including a fireplace and BBQ area—foster social connection, reinforcing the belief that well-designed spaces contribute to both sustainability and community well-being. Mechanically, the building is powered entirely by renewable energy and designed for long-term sustainability. Low-impact, responsibly sourced materials ensure durability, while passive design principles enhance thermal comfort and acoustic performance.
To help support the project’s emphasis on renewable energy and low-impact living, Fanco’s Infinity-iD DC ceiling fans have been used throughout the project for both the residential apartments within the building, and the HV.Hotel at its peak. They were deliberately specified for the project for their combination of their modern architectural aesthetic, and their extreme energy efficiency. Consuming as little as 3 watts at their lowest setting, these fans provide consistent, comfortable temperatures with minimal environmental impact and their inclusion highlights the role of advanced ventilation and air movement products through reducing energy consumption while improving indoor comfort, helping the project reach its impressive 8.6-star average energy rating.
Recognised with multiple architectural awards, Ferrars & York exemplifies how innovative materials, renewable energy, and intelligent design can shape a more sustainable future. As a model for future urban developments, it proves that exceptional design and environmental responsibility can seamlessly coexist and Fanco is proud to have contributed to this pioneering project, reinforcing our shared commitment to better-built environments that prioritise both sustainability and liveability.
